Oz Farm History

Here are some bibliographic references to books that include aspects of the farm's history and relevant local activities.

Thurston Clark, California Fault: Searching for the Spirit of a State Along the San Andreas, Chapters 14 (The Raven and the Wizard) and 19 (The Wizard of Sutro Heights) (Ballantine Books, a division of Random House, NY 1996). These chapters describe the author's visits with John Hooper at OZ Farm and some history of the farm as an ecotopian experiment ("Village Oz") under the leadership of its previous owners, and an interview with one of those owners, Lawrence ("Redwood") Kroll in San Francisco.

Helen Nestor, Family Portraits in Changing Times, pages 91-95 (NewSage Press, Troutdale, OR 1992). Statements by Margot Savitri Kroll and Lawrence Redwood Kroll, previous owners of the farm when it was called "Village Oz", and wonderful black & white photographic portraits of the Kroll family taken by the author over 10 years apart.

Tom Turner, Justice on Earth: Earthjustice and the people it has served, pages 93-107 (Making the Garcia Safe for Salmon) (Earthjustice, Oakland, CA 2002). The story of Earthjustice, a nonprofit team of attorneys who helped Friends of the Garcia (FrOG) to take legal action to stop gravel mining on the Garcia River and help restore a river system ecosystem. Contains great background history on the Garcia River watershed as well as the compelling battle to save the river for salmon and valuable recreational values.
